Salt Dough Ornaments
I have been trying to find the perfect opportunity to share a philosophical belief with you, the readers of this blog. I think that today’s post is as good as any. Most of you may remember me mentioning Teach Preschool’s website in previous posts. While looking through some archived posts I came across one entitled “Are your preschooler’s loving the process?” After reading this article it was like I heard bells ring out and white doves fly over head.
When having kids complete a project or a craft it’s the process of making it that allows them to learn. Often times we think of the outcome as being the most important because we put our own adult rules onto the activity. I have come to realize that rules can be stifling on creativity. As you will see J & A’s salt dough ornaments are “Christmas” themed but the colors aren’t exactly “traditional”. I let J & A pick the colors that they wanted to paint “their” ornaments, and I believe that the end results are beautiful. Each one is very unique.
I hope that you take the time to read Deborah’s post and next time you have an idea give your children the tools and let them create, let them learn. Support their learning by removing yourself from the equation. I think you’ll be amazed at what you see. 
Papa’s Paper Garland
My husband and I were recently discussing Christmas crafts we made when we were younger. My husband remembers decorating his room as a child with paper garland. On a recent day off from work he made some garland with J & A. It was nice to sit back and let the three of them do their thing.
Reused Cardboard Ornaments
Recently I saw an idea for a Christmas ornament in a magazine. I think the magazine was Family Fun. The ornaments were made of reused cereal boxes. I thought it was a perfect craft to try. I think one of the fun things with these is that you can literally use anything to make and decorate them.
Turkey Tablecloth
If you’ve ever stepped foot into a preschool, elementary school, or anywhere that has young children in November you will most likely see turkeys. You’ll see them in all colors and made out of almost anything. I’ve seen a turkey made out of men’s ties. (If I can find the photo I’ll post it.) It was really cool. Most often you’ll see turkeys made of little handprints. I personally think they’re pretty cute, some would say that their stifling children’s creativity. I recently read a blog post that I can identify with, so my philosophy is why not use handprints? It’s a tool that’s always with the child. To me it’s a perfect gateway to self expression.
